LAWMA Boosts Olusosun Operations By 76%, Evacuates 18,660 Tonnes Of Waste In One Week
The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) says operations at the Olusosun Disposal Facility have increased by more than 76 per cent following the rehabilitation of its access road and the opening of additional waste disposal platforms.
The authority disclosed that it evacuated over 18,660 metric tonnes of municipal solid waste across its disposal facilities within one week.
Speaking during an operations review meeting at LAWMA’s headquarters in Ijora-Olopa on Wednesday, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said the authority recorded 1,866 truck trips across its disposal facilities between July 28 and August 3, 2026.
He described the achievement as a clear indication of the positive impact of strategic investments in waste management infrastructure.
According to Gbadegesin, the Olusosun Disposal Facility accounted for 1,012 truck trips during the period, up from 574 trips recorded in the previous week. The increase of 438 truck trips represents more than a 76 per cent improvement in operational capacity.
He attributed the performance to the rehabilitation of the facility’s access road and the creation of additional waste disposal platforms, which have improved access, reduced truck waiting time, accelerated turnaround, and enhanced waste evacuation across Lagos.
Gbadegesin noted that the improved operations reflect Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s sustained investment in critical waste management infrastructure, adding that the intervention has addressed operational bottlenecks that previously hindered waste evacuation, particularly during the rainy season.
He further revealed that LAWMA recorded its highest daily performance on August 1, processing 349 truck trips, equivalent to an estimated 3,490 metric tonnes of waste, across its disposal facilities.
The LAWMA boss said the Ewu-Elepe, Badagry, and Oke-Osho disposal facilities, along with the Waste-to-Wealth Material Recovery Facility (WAEMRF) in Igando, continued to complement operations at Olusosun, ensuring efficient waste evacuation across the state.
“The steady improvement in our operational figures confirms that investment in critical infrastructure produces measurable results. We are witnessing faster truck turnaround, improved access to disposal facilities, and increased waste evacuation capacity, all of which are translating into better service delivery for Lagos residents,” Gbadegesin said.
He added that LAWMA would sustain the momentum through the construction of modern Transfer Loading Stations, expansion of waste recovery infrastructure, development of waste-to-energy projects, and the acquisition of additional compactor trucks to further strengthen waste collection and disposal logistics across Lagos.
Gbadegesin reaffirmed the authority’s commitment to supporting the Lagos State Government’s vision of transitioning from a landfill-dependent waste management system to an integrated, sustainable model driven by resource recovery, recycling, circular economy principles, and modern waste processing infrastructure.
