The Oyo State Government has announced the enforcement of mandatory waste bin provision for all residential and commercial buildings across the state, giving residents and property owners one month to comply before sanctions begin on September 1, 2026.

The Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Hon. Ademola Aderinto, disclosed this while addressing journalists in his office, saying the directive is part of the government’s renewed drive to improve environmental sanitation and strengthen waste management across Oyo State.

Aderinto said every household, residential building, business premises, shopping complex and plaza must provide waste bins appropriate to the size of the property, the number of occupants and the volume of waste generated.

He added that residents and business owners must also engage only government-accredited Private Sector Participants (PSPs) for waste collection and disposal, warning that anyone using unapproved waste contractors or disposing of refuse through unauthorized means would face legal sanctions.

The commissioner urged residents experiencing challenges with waste collection or those unsure of accredited PSP operators to contact the Oyo State Solid Waste Management Authority (OYOWMA) or the Department of Environmental Health Services under the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources for guidance.

Aderinto further disclosed that enforcement teams would verify proof of payment for waste evacuation services during inspections, stressing that residents and businesses are expected to keep their monthly waste disposal payments up to date as part of the compliance requirements.

He explained that the exercise complements the state’s daily environmental sanitation programme, noting that providing waste bins and engaging accredited PSPs alone would not be enough if premises and surrounding environments are not kept clean.
