‘Family Business’- Ugandan President’s Son, Muhoozi, Announces Bid to Succeed His 81-Year-Old Father in 2031

Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the 52-year-old son of Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, has announced plans to contest the presidency in 2031 and succeed his father.
Kainerugaba said Museveni would serve as his campaign manager and predicted a 90 per cent victory, while the announcement has triggered reactions online.

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni’s 52-year-old son, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has announced his intention to contest the country’s presidency in the 2031 elections, making his ambition to succeed his father public.

Kainerugaba made the announcement in a series of posts on X on Tuesday, declaring: “I will stand for the highest office in the land in 2031. And we will win by the grace of Almighty God.”

He also said his 81-year-old father would support his campaign and predicted that he would secure 90 per cent of the vote.

“Mzee will be my campaign manager,” Kainerugaba said, referring to Museveni by the honorific commonly used for him in Uganda.

Kainerugaba, who heads Uganda’s army and the Patriotic League of Uganda, has for years been regarded as a potential successor to Museveni.

He had previously expressed plans to contest the 2026 presidential election but later withdrew and backed his father, who subsequently won the election.

Museveni has ruled Uganda for more than four decades. During his administration, constitutional changes removed presidential age and term limits, allowing him to remain in power.

It remains unclear whether Museveni intends to contest again in 2031, but his son’s latest declaration has made his own presidential ambition clear.

The announcement has sparked reactions online, with some social media users questioning the nature of the political succession.
