Appeal Court Affirms Judgement Against Union Bank, Dismisses Appeal In Favour Of 62 Retired Workers

The Court Of Appeal , Abuja Judicial Division has dismissed Union Bank’s appeal against its 62 aggrieved pensioners and affirmed the earlier judgement of the National Industrial Court Of Nigeria, Ibadan Judicial Division.

In a lead judgement read by the JCA Abdul Dogo, on Monday, the 17th day of August, 2026, declared that since all the issues raised by the Appellant, the Union Bank of Nigeria, PLC have earlier been resolved against them, the appeal fails and is hereby dismissed.

“The judgement of the National Industrial Court of Nigeria, Ibadan Judicial Division delivered on 5th November, 2024 in Suit No NICN/IB/42/2023 is affirmed”. JCA Abdul Dogo also awarded the sum of N500,000:00K only as costs in favour of the respondents against the Appellant. Justices Ridwan Maiwada Abdullahi and Gabriel Omoniyi Kolawole affirmed, and endorse the order and costs made in the lead judgement read by JCA Abdul Dogo.

The Respondents are former employees of Union Bank of Nigeria, PLC whose employment came to an end in various times between 2006 and 2008. Their case before the trial court, the National Industrial Court, Ibadan Judicial Division, was that they were compulsory retired before attaining the retirement age or completing the prescribed years of service and their exit from Union Bank Of Nigeria PLC’s employment amounted to redundancy governed by the collective agreement between the Nigeria Employers Association of Banks, Insurance and Allied Institutions (NEABIAI) and Association of Senior Staff of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institutions (ASSBIFI).

The National Industrial Court of Nigeria, Ibadan Judicial Division delivered a judgement in favour of the former employees of the Union Bank of Nigeria, PLC on 5th November 2024. Not satisfied, Union Bank Of Nigeria, PLC proceeded to the Court of Appeal, the last destination for determination of industrial related litigation. The Appeal failed.
