The former Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus forward said he had already made plans for life after football, noting that he would pursue other interests to keep himself occupied.

He listed travelling and playing padel among activities he enjoys, adding that retirement would require him to find different ways of filling the space that football has occupied throughout his life.

“Because football could leave a big hole, you have to fill your time in various ways, not just one,” he said.

Ronaldo also reflected on the sacrifices that have shaped his remarkable career, saying he now wants to enjoy the rewards of his years of dedication to the sport.

“I want to continue to enjoy what I’ve earned — what we’ve earned. Because after all it’s been 25 years with a lot of sacrifice,” he said.

The Portugal captain is expected to continue his career with Saudi Pro League side Al Nassr as preparations begin for the new season.

His potential retirement would mark the end of an extraordinary era for a player who has won major domestic and international honours and established himself as one of football’s all time greats.
