Nutrition experts have encouraged Nigerians to include waterleaf in their daily meals, describing the leafy vegetable as a nutritious food that can contribute to healthy living when consumed as part of a balanced diet.

The advice was contained in the Day 8 edition of the Wellness Revolution campaign by A6 Nutrition and Dietary Consultants Limited, which highlighted the nutritional value of waterleaf, known as Efo Gbure in Yoruba, Mgbolodi in Igbo, and Mmiri-nkpo or Ebe-dondon in Efik/Ibibio.

According to the nutrition consultants, waterleaf has a naturally high water content and contains essential nutrients, including vitamins A and C, calcium, magnesium, potassium, and iron, making it a valuable addition to a healthy diet.

The experts noted that incorporating waterleaf into meals such as soups, stews, vegetable sauces, and salads can help improve overall nutrition and support hydration.

They explained that lightly cooking the vegetable helps preserve its freshness and nutritional value while enhancing its taste.

The consultants also advised consumers to wash waterleaf thoroughly before cooking or eating it to remove dirt and other contaminants.

They stressed that although waterleaf offers numerous nutritional benefits, it should be consumed as part of a varied and balanced diet rather than relied upon as the sole source of nutrients.

As part of the campaign’s daily wellness challenge, Nigerians were encouraged to prepare a meal containing waterleaf and inspire others to adopt healthier eating habits.

The campaign also featured a wellness quote, reminding the public that, “Good health is built one healthy meal at a time. Every nutritious choice moves you closer to a stronger and healthier life.”
